About Tamara Gurbis

tamcamlookingskyWith fifteen years of experience, Tamara Gurbis has worked professionally as producer, director of photography, director, production and post-production manager, editor and DVD author.

While completing her sociology degree at the University of Nantes, France, she taught undergraduate sociology courses.  Later, wanting to merge her background in the social sciences with her artistic penchant, she studied and collaborated with other filmmakers and video professionals on documentaries and other media projects in Russia for two years.

In 1997, she returned to the United States and located in New York City. After having worked freelance in fashion, corporate and entertainment video, she jointly formed Digital Asylum and worked as producer, camera operator, director of photography and editor on various educational programs, documentaries, short and feature films, experimental, and commercial videos. She also taught undergraduate and graduate-level video seminars and workshops at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and headed NYU’s Production Center’s Advanced Film Department. She opened Phenomenal Films in California in 2004. She has worked on both video and multimedia projects for PBS-WNET and KQED, Polychrome Studio, Warner Home Video, French Premiere Magazine, Associated Press, Yoga Journal, and New Video/Docurama, Mongrel Media, and the Health and Healing Network.
